The Dwarf Nam Wah is a compact, powerhouse banana cultivar prized for its exceptionally sweet, dense fruit and vigorous growth. Originally from Thailand and widely grown across Southeast Asia, this variety produces fat, plump bananas with a creamy texture and rich flavor — often described as more intense than supermarket varieties.

It’s fast-growing, wind-tolerant, and ideal for both backyard growers and boutique farms looking to harvest premium bananas in a smaller space.

🌿 Plant Growth

  • Reaches 8–10 ft tall — ideal for in-ground or large container growing

  • Upright, sturdy structure with broad leaves and thick pseudostem

  • Wind-resistant and strong, with great performance in open fields

  • Begins fruiting within 12–18 months in warm conditions

  • Thrives in full sun and organically rich, well-drained soil

🍌 Fruit Description

  • Short, thick bananas with firm, creamy flesh

  • Sweeter and denser than Dwarf Cavendish

  • Flavor notes: banana bread, honey, and light vanilla

  • Excellent fresh, frozen, grilled, or dried

  • Bunches can yield 30–50 lbs of fruit per stalk

❄️ Cold Tolerance

  • USDA Zones 9b–11

  • Can survive down to low 30s°F with protection

  • Regrows vigorously from the base after cold damage

📅 Harvest Season

  • Fruiting begins 12–18 months from planting

  • Fruit matures 3–4 months after flowering

  • Reliable producer in subtropical and tropical climates

💼 Ideal For

  • Backyard food forests, edible landscapes, rare fruit collectors

  • High-flavor banana sales, farmer’s markets, smoothie shops

  • CSA and homestead operations looking for compact but productive cultivars

  • Landscapers needing a tropical look with functional yield
